The Cappella Palatina is famous all over the world for its wonderful mosaic works and its wooden ceiling (muquarnas).
However the Cappella Palatina perserves in its inner part another "treasure".The matter in hand is a rich patrimony of holy vestments realized with precious materials, like esteemed silks, gold and silver embroidery. These sumptuos
ornaments evocate the solemnity defining holy ceremonies during the past centuries. There is expected a next exposition of holy vestments of the Cappella Palatina of which we can already have a view in this web-site by means of twenty pictures. The vestments represent a valuable evidence of uses and customs of Sicily between the XVII and the XIX century.Right in that period it was ordered the most part of the vestments outlasted the fire of 1963.
The consignors of these gorgeous hand-made textiles were not only ecclesiastical institutions, but also sovereigns and aristocrats who often gave their own casted off dresses, from which were obtained priestly vestments.Among the more
precious and original ones, let us mention the umbrella gold-lace embroidered which was used during the liturgical celebrations and of which we can have a view from some images of this web-site.
